Artist Statement
My work is about the intimate moments I’ve shared with family, friends, and partners; most specifically, it addresses my personal experience. There is an inherent need within me as an artist to evaluate the self and honor those individuals and things that have nurtured, nourished, guided, and protected me, whether it was in a literal, emotional, or psychological sense. I use the photographic image as a tool for recollection, exploring the slippage between the photo and my memory. Revisiting these images and translating them through different mediums guides me in recalling intimate life experiences.
My processes include oil painting, bead and felt work, embroidery, and screen printing on fabric. I combine mediums and explore materiality such as the dyeing and felting of wool onto self printed fabric to simulate Black hair texture, beading time-based popular imagery (the American Apparel logo, succulent plants, band logos, quotes/sayings from websites like Tumblr) on painted and stretched canvas, as well as sourcing and printing out personal photo references for paintings. These references range from pictures I’ve taken, such as physical photos that family members and/or friends have taken, and/or stock images from the internet.
My work is highly personal, yet, I aim to examine the nature of the imagery I choose and consider how these experiences allow the audience space and opportunity to imbue their own meanings and interpretations, encouraging them to reflect on their own connections to the intimate moments and relationships in their lives.
